MIrror
A girl is holding a mirror primping. The two reflections are standing behind her.
Girl says while posing: Mirror mirror on the wall who’s the fairest of them all?
Reflection 2 responds: Certainly not you…
Reflection steps away from the ‘mirror’ and is joined by second ‘reflection’ both circles the girl, looking her over in an evaluating way.
Reflect 1: You’re too thin, do you think anyone wants a bag of bones?
Reflect 2: You’re too fat, you need to lose weight, look how gross you are…
Girl continues to look in the mirror, now evaluating her body size and type, before shaking her head in disgust: I’m beautiful just the way I am.
Girl says it, but her face is doubtful as the two reflections continue to circle around her, pointing out contradictory‘‘flaws’
Reflect 1:You’re too tall
Reflect 2:You’re too short
Girl holds two outfits up in front of her, one casual, one more formal
Reflect 1: You’ll look like a boy
Reflect 2: You’ll look too high maintenance in that one
She throws the clothes down, and turns away from the mirror and picks up a book to read.
Reflections continue to move around her, one takes the book away from her
Reflect 1: Guys don’t want you to be too smart
She picks up a fashion magazine instead
Reflect 2: Only air headed vain women read those
She reaches for a bible
Both reflections together: Religious freak
She pauses and then pushes it away.
Her phone pings with a text message and the two ‘reflections’ look over her shoulder.
Boy reads text off stage: Are you still up for dinner tonight, babe?
Reflect 1: Tonight’s the night, better put on your sexiest clothes, don’t want him to think you’re a prude
She picks up a revealing top
Reflect 2: Don’t wear that, you don’t want him to think you’re desperate
Girl receives another text and boy reads off stage: Reservations for dinner were canceled, I can pick you up and we can hang at my place instead
Girl looks back at the mirror before starting to text, looking unsure.
Reflect 1: If you cancel, he’ll hate you
Reflect 2: Playing hard to get is good, it will make him want you more.
Girl finishes texting reading it out: Okay, see you then!
Scene changes
They greet each other, and then he puts his arm around her shoulder and pulls her close as they head towards his place, and starts pressuring her for sex.
Boy: C’mon baby, you know you want to
Girl: I don’t know…
She looks uncomfortable and tries to shy away from the boy as the reflections chime in
Reflect 1:No one chooses to be a virgin...go ahead you’ll love it...
Reflect 2: You’ve only known him a month, it’s too soon, you’ll just be a trashy girl
Girl gives in to pressure from the guy and reflection 1
Girl: Okay...whatever you want...
Boy starts leading the girl off stage, but just before they exit she hesitates, changing her mind.
Girl: Wait, I don’t think this is such a good idea after all
Boy and girl start arguing, he hits her, causing her to fall
Boy:I don’t know what I saw in you anyway...you’re not worth the trouble, I’m so done with you.
He breaks up with her leaving her on the floor crying
Reflections start to repeat her ‘flaws’ their voices overlapping
You’re too thin - You’re too short - You’re too girly - You’re too smart
You’re too fat - You’re too tall - You’re too boyish - You’re too stupid
A quiet voice is heard as the girl sobs (Jesus): My Child….I’m here…
The reflections get louder, the voice tries again: My daughter...I love you…
The reflections start yelling at the girl
Jesus enters and kneels beside the girl and begins to whisper in her ear and the reflections voices lower, while Jesus’ voice grows louder, until reflections can no longer be heard.
Jesus: You are my precious child. I created you to be perfect, everything about you is perfect, you are beautiful, you are worthy, and you are loved. You are forgiven...just believe…
Reflections are growing angry and Reflect 1 shoves Jesus away and hisses in the girl’s ear: Remember what you did? Do you think He can love you now?
Girl sits there conflicted, then stands and picks up her bible, looking at it for a moment before picking it up and throwing it at the reflections. The two reflections fall to the ground while Jesus stands, and the girl goes to kneel at his feet saying: I believe.
